The Son was an embodiment of the dark side of the Force whole dwelled on the planet Mortis. The Son sought to escape Mortis and wreak havoc in the galaxy, after his death along with those of the Daughter and the Father, his essence of the dark side was imparted into these crystals.
No one is truly sure where these crystals came from, some say the well of the dark side or if they were created through the will of the Force itself. It is believed that those that can wield this crystal are not Sith, but the true embodiment of the Dark Side.
